I think going dry is a great step but is hard for those who've been regular drinkers. I think monitoring like you are doing is a good idea. I've seen people who have specific days they won't drink. Dry days. These you have to put in and stick to regardless of your social calendar.
In terms of monitoring I think its a good idea to log and graph units of alchol consumed each day/week. If your having dry days then perhaps you have a daily and weekly limit on the number of units you can have on the wet days.
Maybe over a month or so set targets then make consumption go down.
