NEWCASTLE CAN SCHEME

Newcastle Can is a ground-breaking social experiment encouraging communities
throughout the city to work together getting healthier and fitter. The project is headed by
Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall in collaboration with Newcastle City Council.
One in three people in Britain are now overweight or obese, and if current trends continue by
2025, Britain is set to become the fattest country in Europe. Newcastle Can will discover if
citizens of one city, acting together and supporting each other, could create a new model
for making a real impact on this seemingly intractable problem.
The ultimate goal is to see Newcastle lose a collective 100,000 lbs in one year. To date we’ve
signed up businesses and workplaces across the city, including call centres, taxi firms, the
police and NHS. There are also individuals and groups of friends doing amazing things in their
own communities. But we still have a long way to go!
People, organisations and businesses are all getting involved at www.newcastlecan.com
and inviting friends, family and colleagues to join them. Each person who signs up gets their
own personal food intake diary and weight loss dashboard, lots of information about healthy
eating and exercise, as well as details of upcoming events and local resources. And we’re
working with the council and organisations across the city to showcase the fantastic
activities already in action and engage more people with them. There are also many teams
on the website, including businesses, gyms and even neighbors – all working together and
encouraging one another.
If we get this right, and reach or get close to our target, it will be a brilliant result
for Newcastle. It could have a real and lasting effect on the overall health of the city. And if
it works, it’s an idea that could be rolled out across Britain. It would be incredible to make this
the year that Newcastle shows the rest of Britain how it is done!

Aspects of the Newcastle Can initiatives are being filmed as part of a four-
part documentary series on the national obesity crisis that Hugh is making for prime

time BBC One. Hugh’s last BBC One campaign ‘Hugh’s War on Waste’ had five million
viewers and resulted in a huge ripple effect, creating change on a national level.
