This week we look at alcohol and its interference with our weightloss goals.
Alcohol is empty calories, providing no nutrition, and when we do drink it becomes our bodies preferred energy source, so the food we eat can then easily end up being stored as excess body fat. It also damages our liver, making it more difficult to utilise food for energy, making weight loss more difficult.
With a belly-bulging 43 calories per unit, cutting down – or cutting out – alcohol is one of the best things you can do if you want to lose weight. Now ofcourse this isnt easy gents, especially when the habit surrounds gatherings with friends and families over the weekends.
The problem is, what can we replace alcohol with? Water will only keep you satisfied for so long, soft drinks and juices are just as bad for you. Non-alcoholic beer however will have you raring to hit the gym or pound the pavements in the morning instead of burying your head under the duvet. On top of this you’ll be consuming fewer calories, less sugar and no nasty additives.
If you do want to have an alcoholic drink, 45mls of vodka, gin, whiskey, tequila and brandy contain 100 calories. Ideally mix with low calorie mixers like soda water or have on the rocks, and make sure to stay hydrated. I have also provided a website with the best low calorie beers available in Australia.
At the end of the day, limit this consumption wherever you can and concsiously select better options when you feel required to drink.
